Over time, my view of Pintrest Mood Boards has changed. Sometimes character development and world building is hard work. Characters don’t always just show up on your doorstep and ask to have a cup of tea with you before info-dumping their entire life story! I don’t know where they came from, or how they developed, but they’ve been in my mind for as long as I can remember. They’re not based off celebrities, or even real-life friends. My cast of characters in The Tales of Tarsurella didn’t come from Pintrest. I wrinkled my nose and thought, “Isn’t that cheating? Basing your stories off faces of known celebrities and models? Isn’t your work supposed to be 100% original? Aren’t characters supposed to appear out of thin air, and beg to be written about, without the assistance of writing aids?” To be completely honest, when I first heard about the craze, I wasn’t a fan.
In the past few years, the rise of “Inspiration Boards” for novelists has been HUGE. (When I first discovered the site, it was back when you had to be “Exclusively Invited” by another user, and I waited like 6 weeks on their waiting list!) When they finally let me in, I spent hours and hours and HOURS discovering, sorting, and organizing my pins. Somewhere along my path of exploring this wild and wonderful indie-publishing world, I discovered Character Inspiration and Pintrest Mood Boards. I’ve read expert books to strengthen my craft, listened to writers podcasts, and networked with a bunch of amazing authors and authoresses. I’ve learned that every writer has their own unique methods to capturing, developing, and telling a story. Since then, I’ve learned SO much about writing.

Then, after months of writing, re-writing, then re-writing some more, I gulped nervously and asked who might like to serve on my team of Beta Readers.Īnd that’s when it started. I read the very (VERY) rough manuscript to my cousins and their excitement sparked the possibility that others might actually enjoy visiting this whimsical land. It wasn’t until a hot, humid, summer day several years ago, when I pulled out my old thumb-drive and read the digital pages of The Coronation. Something stirred within my soul as these forgotten characters came to life once more. My love for writing faded into the background for several years as a teen, busy with the sheer craziness of life. Soon, typing became as easy as breathing. I slowly, painfully, plucked away, one letter at a time, pinkie by pinkie, until I finished my first story. My passion for storytelling carried on through my teen years, as I discovered the magic of the keyboard. I wrote my stories with a sloppy longhand and doodled wobbly pictures to match. Long before the days of WiFi and Pintrest.
